 Foaling Journal
« Thread Started on Jan 25, 2007, 10:59pm »

I have always kept a journal for my mares at foaling time. I write in it for the last few weeks of their pregnancy until foal is born. Well I have decide to not only keep my own journal I have
decided to add one to my site.

We have for last 8 years used a baby cam we bought from sears, in the barn. Well I decided I should buy a replacement cam before that one dies.

If your looking for barn cam click on this link to see where I got mine: http://gallery.andale.com/gallerycid=25183416&mt=&mid=1&mlcat=11751

It is very easy to hook up and use

For live foal cam please click on link: http://www.marestare.com/mystery.htm

Note because I am on dial up it will not be on 24/7.
I do record the birth so if you miss it live, I will be posting it on my web site. Cam will be on when foaling season starts for us (March/April 2007). So check back regularly to read our on line journal and to find out when our cam is on.

Around 30-33 days left until due:

Looking at my journal from last yr I noticed Mercedes started baging up around 40 days before "Due date of March 22, 2006"
She foaled March 13th after having full bag for 3 days.

So I am thinking if she does the same thing this year she will foal around Second week in March. Glad I read my records, from 2004 & 2006!!! In 2004 she had many due days as she had been bred for 15 solid days. So am not sure if she foaled that yr sooner then I would of thought.

Right now Mercedes foal is moving around lots and making her mad at times. I see her nipping belly and stomping back legs. Also hates me to touch her side some times.

Flirt will be going into barn at night starting first or second week in March, she was bred for 10 solid days starting end of April into May. Never foaled out this mare before, so will be watching her.

Ruby still questioning her due time, but am starting to think she is due for third week in April. Time will tell. ::)

You can really see foals moving in their moms. I love watching their belly move around. :D

So Mercedes is starting to eat less and is now not wanting to be touched as much. Also hanging off by her self more. She is 325 days in foal now.

Flirts bag seems to be growing from back to front. She is also eating less and hanging off by her self. She is 315 days in foal now.
Wanted to say also that any mare that is bred to Trooper is going to have huge foal at birth. Mares may take longer giving birth because of it. So do not worry. "Flirt & Cassie are in foal by Trooper."

Also our Breeding plans for 2007 are:

Trying to get Gina in foal to Trooper and keep her in foal. She will be bred in April.

Breeding Miriha & Sheik to CR Royale Coppersin in April for 2008 Pintabian foals.

In May will be breeding Cassie and Flirt back to Trooper for April 2008 foals.

Flirt well she has about same size of bag as posted in picture of her bag few post back. She has HUGE belly. Going to be one big foal.

Ruby & Cassie starting to get little bit bagged up.

Vicki is just putting on more weight.

March 15th/07

Mercedes bag is bigger at 11pm then it was at 9pm. She has her ears back tonight.

Flirt when I first put into barn tonight was rippling from front of body to end. Her bag is staying about same size. Since this is my first time foaling her out I have no clue as to how big a bag she gets or what signs she may show. We are watching her close.

I am watching both mares close and doing checks at 11pm, 2/3 am, just to see if any changes in either of them.

9:40pm went to check on girls. Mercedes seems to be cramping little tonight. Well 10 minutes after writing this post she gave birth to beautiful Tobiano filly!!!

Flirt is doing good. No changes with her

Others about the same

Cam is on from 6/7pm until 2/3am mountain time. Unless I feel Mercedes is going to foal, then I will leave it on.

Also all depending on dial up connection staying connected.

March 19th/07, well we are keeping flirt by her self as she is loose today and is not eating. Not to happy about other horses around her. She will be on foal cam as of tonight.

At this time I am not going by her bag.

Mercedes & RoyaLee are doing great.

Ruby has bag and Cassie has bag skin growing.

Vicki is due end of April no change in her yet.

March 21, so I decided to contact Flirt's old owner for foaling info on her. Here is what she told me:

Both years she did foal early, her bag never got very big until after foaling. The first year she didn't wax up the second year it was just a tiny milk droplet. Her hips did drop and she softened up.

Nail to String or tail hair test:

Hold nail over the back or next to back end of belly. Make sure to hold it still. In a quick time frame the string will either go in circle for Filly or in straight line for colt.

only time I found it was wrong, was when my two mares I thought in foal were not!!! I do it at 8 & 10 months along.
